Title:
The President Should be Elected Like American Idol
Created on:
May 22, 2007
Okay, I know you are thinking I am crazy but hear me out. The race would start with up ten candidates for each party and week by week the American people would vote for their favorite. The candidate with the least amount of votes would be eliminated until we have the next President of the United States.
So, should the President be elected like American Idol with a competition where the loser is eliminated?

It is really a different idea but who will agree to it especially a political leader.

In response to teammate:They should want to agree because this would be the best way to get a captive audience and they do not have to travel from town to town. It would save a ton of money for the campaigns and we would not have as much corruption there. I like it.

I agree that it will save huge money as well as it will reduce corruption.

More honest votes. I think not. Idol was a joke at times this year. There were times it had nothing to do with talent and it became a popularity contest. In the end the best man did win. We have one too many bozos out there.

Yep. That's just what we need, electing a president based on popularity vs. platform. Give it up.

In response to Kat:The Presidency is basically a popularity contest and people only vote for someone because he/she is a Democrat or Republican. There needs to be a more accessible means for the majority of the public to hear what the Politicians have to say. I am not sure this is the best way, but it is an interesting idea and something needs to be done to get more voter turnout (and illegals is not the answer).

I think it's a shame that anyone would think that it's a good idea to reduce the presidential race to a popularity contest. People deserve the leadership that they elect.

In response to sweetnothing:Changing it to make it elections ala Idol, would make it more of a popularity contest, not less. I don't think that's the direction that we want to head.

In response to BigD:I agree that this would make a mockery of the election process, but I do think it would get a much bigger voter turnout.

Our political leaders will find out the other dihonest methods to win the election.

If it would boost the amount of voter turnout then it'd have to be a good thing. Plus I think that it would be interesting to see politians not able to rely on soundbites for a change.

I gotta say that is an interesting idea! But what would be the competition about? Debates with one another? Would they be able to complete something at that time? How many people would be able to vote? And how many votes for each person??? I say let's do it the right way: one person, one vote, NO ELECTORAL COLLEGE!
