Title:
Price Flooring Should Be Allowed
Created on:
December 11, 2007
As soon as Barkley Heron learned he was one of two winners of the $22 million Canadian lottery jackpot, he cut the price of gas at his service station from $1.15 a liter to 50 cents a liter. Word spread quickly in the town of about 2,300, located on the Alberta border. Trucks and snowmobiles lined up for several blocks to cash in on Heron's gas deal until the tanks ran dry. "We got a large turnout. There was a lineup for a couple of blocks," Heron told CBC News on Sunday as he was refueling the tanks. "By this morning, we emptied the last of it … about 10,000 liters."

I went out the other day, drove to New Jersey and filled up the tank for 2.99 per gallon, against the 3.31 in NY near my house. After I drove away , I saw 2 blocks later a Shell gas station selling it for 3.05. 5 blocks later another gas station that had 2.91 per gallon... so, if the competition is so close, and the changes in price make a significant difference in my pocket, then I'd support the floooring. I'm sure the 2.91 is also making a profit.

The problem of gas isnt in regard to the single gas owner - especially in the United States of America (I cannot speak for Canada). The U.S. is made up of name brand gas chains such as Shell and Arco to name a few. The problem is that our current government thinks we need to purchase gas from a socialist country to supply this for Americans, when in fact, the US has gas available - not in reserves, but actual gas is pumped in many states. The solution is to utilize our natural resources here in the US and to do away with states having the power to add chemicals to gas to increase the price of gas for certain consumers. For example, in California alone Indian Casino's could be taxed and that revenue could then be used to change gas laws in California on a state level. On a Federal level, gas could be purchased in state. Most gas stations are franchises anyway, so in the US the scenario above would not apply. Franchises do not allow the business owner to determine the price like that.
