Price Flooring Should Be Allowed
As soon as Barkley Heron learned he was one of two winners of the $22 million Canadian lottery jackpot, he cut the price of gas at his service station from $1.15 a liter to 50 cents a liter. Word spread quickly in the town of about 2,300, located on the Alberta border. Trucks and snowmobiles lined up for several blocks to cash in on Heron's gas deal until the tanks ran dry. "We got a large turnout. There was a lineup for a couple of blocks," Heron told CBC News on Sunday as he was refueling the tanks. "By this morning, we emptied the last of it … about 10,000 liters."
Heron wanted to give some of his fortune back to the people, so he thought that during times where gas prices have never been higher, the best thing to do was cut his prices. At first thought, you must think this is a great thing and there should not be any problems. But, there has been an outcry by fellow gas stations in the area that cannot compete with these prices. Now that Heron has millions he does not have to depend on the profits of his gas station to make a living. Even with these drastic cuts in prices he is still turning a very small profit, but not enough to live on.
So, the thing you must ask is there a price that is too low that one can charge? And, the answer is yes. Although there are other competitors that are being hurt by his cheap gas, there are many patrons benefiting from it. One gas station already had to fire some employees because they were not making enough money to pay them. This is something that would not go on forever, but who is to say that he cannot pass his good fortune onto others. In our capitalistic world there is no such thing as something being to cheap and price flooring should be allowed.
